1. Who we are
Chunklen is an English-learning service operated by Chunklen. Questions about this policy or your personal data can be sent to [email protected].
2. Data we collect
Account information
When you create an account, we collect your name and email address. For accounts created with email and password, we store a cryptographic hash of the password, not the password itself.
If you choose Google or Apple sign-in, that provider sends us a verified account identifier, name when available, and email address. We record which sign-in option originally created the account. We do not receive your Google or Apple password.
Learning and app activity
We record lesson activity needed to provide and improve the service, including exercises shown, answers, correctness, mistakes, progress, mastery, review timing, completed lessons, and generated learning reports. We also store your reading preferences.
Device and notification information
If you choose to enable mobile notifications, we receive and store a push-notification token, platform, time zone, app version, last-seen time, and notification delivery state. Notification permission is optional and may be revoked in the app or device settings.
Website and product analytics
We use a first-party session identifier to understand visits and product use. We may record page or feature events, response and active time, broad device category, referring website host, app and content versions, and an irreversible keyed hash of the network address used for a visit. We do not create browser fingerprints and do not store raw network addresses in product analytics. Standard server, session, and security logs may temporarily contain a network address, user agent, and request details to deliver and protect the service.
Optional research participation
If you separately agree to join a Chunklen product study, we may collect your consent, random participant ID, native language, self-reported English level, optional recent CEFR score, years studying, weekly English use, relevant learning habits, broad age range, device category, time zone, answers, and timing. Study participation is optional and is covered by an additional consent screen shown before enrollment.
3. How we use data
- create and secure your account;
- save progress and provide lessons, reviews, preferences, and reports;
- send service emails and optional notifications you requested;
- operate, troubleshoot, secure, and improve Chunklen;
- measure product performance and understand aggregate learning patterns;
- run optional studies when you have separately agreed to participate; and
- comply with law, prevent abuse, and protect users and the service.
Chunklen does not sell personal data, show third-party advertising, or track you across other companies’ apps or websites for advertising.
4. Service providers and disclosures
We disclose only the data needed to service providers that operate hosting, databases, email delivery, backups, security, and technical infrastructure for Chunklen. When you enable notifications, Apple Push Notification service or Firebase Cloud Messaging processes the device token and message delivery information for the relevant platform. If you choose federated sign-in, Google or Apple processes the authentication request under that provider's own privacy terms. These providers process data under their own terms and privacy commitments.
We may also disclose information if reasonably necessary to comply with law, respond to valid legal process, investigate abuse, protect safety or rights, or complete a business transfer subject to appropriate safeguards. We do not give identifiable study data to advertisers, and public study reports do not include names or email addresses.
5. Cookies and local storage
Chunklen uses first-party cookies or device storage to keep you signed in, protect requests, maintain a short visit-measurement session, remember app state, and provide core features. We do not use third-party advertising cookies.
6. Retention and deletion
Account information, learning history, preferences, notification devices, and linked study profiles are kept while your account is active. When you delete your account, we remove the account and data linked to it from active systems and revoke active access tokens. Temporary backup copies, if present, are isolated from normal use and expire through the backup cycle. We may retain a limited record only when required for security, fraud prevention, dispute resolution, or law.
Anonymous public sample responses and site traffic records that are not linked to an account may remain for product measurement. Aggregated or de-identified statistics that can no longer identify you may also be retained. See Account Deletion for the available deletion methods and what is removed.
7. Your choices and rights
Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, export, object to or restrict certain processing, withdraw consent, or delete personal data. You can change app preferences at any time, disable notifications in app or device settings, and delete your account from Chunklen Settings. You may also email [email protected] from your account address. We may need to verify your identity before completing a request.
8. Security and international processing
We use reasonable administrative and technical safeguards, including encrypted network connections, hashed passwords, access controls, and data minimization. No system can guarantee absolute security. Chunklen and its service providers may process data in countries other than your own, with protections appropriate to the service and applicable law.
9. Children
Chunklen is not directed to children under 13. If local law requires a higher age to consent to online services, use is permitted only with authorization from a parent or legal guardian. Optional product studies are intended for adults unless their consent materials expressly state otherwise. Contact us if you believe a child provided personal data without required permission.
10. Changes and contact
We may update this policy as Chunklen or applicable requirements change. We will post the revised policy here, change the effective date, and provide additional notice when appropriate. Privacy questions and requests can be sent to [email protected].
